Book Review: Wikinomics
Wikinomics by Don Tapscott & Anthony D. Williams is an economics book, as well as a technology book, as well as a sociological review of the new culture that is being created around collaboration on the Internet. Though I do not agree with every point that the book makes, if you are interested in the ways that the Internet is effecting our global economic and social infrastructures, this is a must-read.
This book is aimed at commercial enterprise, however nonprofits can learn a great deal about ways to engage their constituents in content creation and social networking. Many nonprofits would gain a great deal by embracing these technologies, which help maintain top-of-mind awareness and knowledge of an organization's programs and successes. Reading this book will help you know if you are one of the organizations that will benefit and will show you outlets that you can use to connect your site to other websites discussed in the book.
The Wiknomics website is a case study for their theory in that it does not just sell their book and provide information about the authors but also gives users an opportunity to help create the 11th (yet unpublished) chapter of the book, the Wikinomics Play Book. This chapter will discuss experiences and best practices for using Internet collaboration techniques.
If this sounds interesting, you can read the book or listen to it on CDs available at the Boulder Public Library.
