First, here are some general information links to the city and state of where you will be serving. If you are from the east coast, you will be traveling here from an environment of a lower altitude, and if so, a couple of things to keep in mind:

Denver’s altitude is 5,280 ft…hence, the Mile High City

As you go higher in elevation, the air is thinner and drier, less oxygen is available, and the sun's ultraviolet rays are stronger. You will most likely become more short of breath more quickly and easily than at low altitudes.

You should:

  • Minimize alcohol and caffeine intake on your day of arrival, and shortly thereafter (be aware that at a high altitude you are much more sensitive to the effects of alcohol and sedatives)
  • Decrease salt intake
  • Eat frequent small meals, high in carbohydrates, low in fat and protein
  • Until you are well adjusted, moderate physical activity and get plenty of rest!

Relocation

Keep all reciepts for shipping - a percentage of this can be reimbursed in addition to the relocation allowance.

Moving Your Belongings

Rental Truck, Shipping, Movers, Etc.

VISTA Relocation Benefits:

AmeriCorps* VISTA may receive a relocation allowance for a move from your home of record to the project site. In addition, VISTAs may receive some reimbursement for transportation costs. Contact your supervisor for information.

Moving Supplies

Boxes, Suitcases, Etc.

Transportation

Plane or train ticket, gas money, airport shuttles, etc.

Initial rent and deposits

Many landlords require payment of first and last month's rent and a security deposit.

Temporary Housing

You may need a few nights at a hostel, dorm, or hotel while you look at housing--see below for suggestions

VISTA Members will not receive a relocation allowance until after PSO so be sure to plan accordingly.
